I used to think that you got nothing from turnips except water. So I ate little of it, if any. But after knowing its health benefits, I renewed my love for turnips, especially when chilled with a bit of vinegar and salt.

You eat less and get no added calories because all you get are fibers and watery juice. But don't get me wrong, because this watery juice is packed with nutrition. Just eating two regular sized turnips gives you the Vitamin C your body needs for the whole day. I love eating them raw--just peel them and enjoy the juicy crunchiness. I also mix them with some foods I cook and they easily blend well with any salad. But best of all, I love eating them raw in thin slices, chilled, while watching TV or DVD.

Another online source says turnips are rich in Vitamins A, the B vitamins (1,2,3,5,6, plus folate) with minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, copper, phosphorus, protein, omega-3 fatty acids and protein. Unbelievable right, for a root crop that seems to have nothing but water. And it's often ignored by people because of its bland look and taste. Others say its only appealing feature is its crunchiness. 

By the way, though it seems related to beets and potatoes, it's really with the cruciferous family.
